I have been a fully qualified counsellor of couples and individuals for more than 25 years. Listening to clients over the years has taught me that each one has their own unique story to tell and that my responsibility is to make sure that the counselling setting is safe enough for them to feel heard and understood. That said, I have regularly been humbled by the courage shown by clients as they face the challenges that life has brought them and with the determination needed to improve their situations.
For the counselling to work, especially at such painful, difficult times, first of all there needs to be trust and openness to new ideas and ways of working. Once again, that’s when clients can appreciate the support and encouragement that I, their counsellor, can give them. That relationship between my clients and me is fundamental to the counselling process and its success.
